Chief Wizard interview with Network World!

sachin dev duggal

Co-founder & Chief Wizard

Hello you :) - I'm SDD – an entrepreneur, and an advocate of sustainable enterprise that makes money and solves a world problem; as the title suggests I am the co-founder and Chief Wizard at shoto after creating nivio with my best friend Saurabh Dhoot.

I am an investor and on the Board of Planet M (a large retail chain for music, movies and gaming), am an advisor to Eros International (Bollywood Studio, Distribution Company) and finally am working with Saurabh on creating the Sachin & Saurabh Foundation for educating children in impoverished areas around the world.

With great humility I was in the Class of 2009 with the World Economic Forum Technology Pioneers; my other accomplishments include MIT Innovator of the Year under 35 in 2011, Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Finalist, BBC Young Asian Achiever of the Year 2001, PWC Leader of Tomorrow in 2000.

I love tennis, meditation, singing, salsa and having a debate on solving education – secretly I love fast cars! Come give me a shout @sachinduggal

Oh and I always wanted to be a rebel in moderation :)

nick noreña

Co-founder and Chief Storyteller

Hey there! My name is Nick, and I run our customer development & smiles (what we call support) operations. Day to day, you'll find me contacting users and potential users, digging for feedback that will help our company produce a useful and fun photo experience. I'm also looking after how we help you when you get stuck.

Before shoto, I studied Religion at Davidson College, and worked primarily in the outdoor industry doing everything from casual trip leading to direct care therapy with organizations like The Autism Society of NC and Stone Mountain School. I've always put people first; working with autistic individuals toward happy and healthy lives and supporting adolescents with their behavioral and learning challenges are part of that. I'm constantly driven to understand why people do the things they do and am really excited about getting to the bottom of user behavior and engagement at shoto.

I love being in the outdoors (I'm happiest with the contents of my life in a bag on my back), traveling on two wheels, and writing/playing music.

Follow me here.

brian norton

Co-founder & Chief Hacker

Why hello there! I run engineering at shoto which means that I am responsible for our apps as well as the underlying architecture that supports our big picture. My team makes the technology work for you :)

I have a passion for the human aspect of technology. Before university, I helped small business run their information technology and data infrastructure. This gave me a unique perspective and the opportunity to see how professionals understand and leverage technology.

I'm classically trained in computer science and graduated in 2011 from UC Berkeley. Afterwards, I joined Involver where I built a social data and analytics search engine. Large brands used our product to discover who was talking about them and what they were saying.

I love evolution, the outdoors, my partner and my ridiculous dog Ruby. Every day challenges me to understand more about how the world works.

Strategy Wizard & Co-founder

Hey - I'm SPD and as the title suggests I am a co-founder at shoto after creating nivio with my best friend Sachin. I sit on the board, look after strategic partnerships as we start scaling and am the "in person whose on the outside of day to day" operations.

I am an investor and on the Board of Planet M (a large retail chain for music, movies and gaming) and am on the Board of my family Business – Videocon Industries. My most successful achievement has been the creation of Videocon d2h, which has become the fastest growing pay TV operator in the world (over 3m Subs/yr) & one of the largest payTV operators in India (8m subs) from scratch; in a market with intense competition, where I was the last operator to launch the business five years after the first.

Most importantly am working with Sachin on creating the Sachin & Saurabh Foundation for educating children in impoverished areas around the world.

I love fashion and have an eye for design. You can reach me at saurabh@shoto.so

pulkit agrawal

Biz Development & Operations

Good morning internet people! I found shoto through meditation (seriously) and am very excited about changing how we all deal with photos!

I read Chemical Engineering at Cambridge, spent a year in rural India training rural youth on starting and running a business with Indicorps and then modeled data and wrote decks for Booz & Company for almost 3 years. I supported the global transformation of India's largest company, conducted commercial due diligence on a Norwegian specialty fabrics supplier (leading to a successful transaction) and helped assess a merger / partnership between two consumer companies. Whilst consulting I co-started and managed a retail space in West London that sold handicrafts made by underprivileged communities in India and Kenya and achieved operational break-even within a year.

At shoto I'm working on keeping the wheels greased and the ship moving, delivering the insights to help us improve our product and figuring out how we can partner with others to provide greater benefits to our users. I'm always open to feedback so please do get in touch @_pulkitagrawal

rohan patel

Junior Android Hacker

Greetings! I'm Rohan and I am a developer here at shoto. I am responsible for developing the Android application; make sure to check it out on the Google Play Store!

I have been coding since the age of 12 and have had a passion for the technological aspects of life for as long as I can remember! It was this drive that pushed me to join a Bachelors of Computer Science program at the University of Waterloo at the tender age of 16. Before that however, I had worked as a web developer, and a server administrator thus exposing me to a variety of paradigms.

I am passionate about brain computer interfaces, skiing, composing and playing music, and languages (human and computer).

Born and raised in India, Shashi completed his Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering and moved to the United States in 1995. He went on to receive his Masters Degree in Industrial Design from Auburn University in 1997. Shashi was a top performer at several prestigious companies including Home Depot, Racetrack Petroleum, and Accenture before leaving to ultimately pursue his dream of becoming an entrepreneur.

In 2002, Shashi used his savings to start his first business, a die casting plant in India that made components for US customers. He quickly realized that the emerging Indian economy had a major appetite for US brands, and he used this knowledge to his advantage. Shashi went on to setup a joint venture with Anheuser Busch (Now AB In-Bev) and successfully launched Budweiser Beer in India in 2005. Anheuser Busch has since bought the venture back.

By 2006, smart phones had a market penetration of less than 2%. Shashi, an avid gadget lover and early adaptor, realized that the demand for smart phones would grow exponentially, and seized the opportunity to create Case-Mate. Headquartered in Atlanta, GA, Case-Mate began with one simple goal - to make protective, stylish, and affordable cases for the gadgets people love. As CEO, Shashi’s passion, creativity and obsession with bringing the “next best thing,” to the market has translated into one of the world’s most innovative accessory companies. Case-Mate now has offices in 7 countries and sells products to major retailers in over 90 countries worldwide.
